VW’s New 400hp Hot Hatch: The Volkswagen Golf R 400

This weekend Volkswagen released it’s latest production model. It’s a little Golf R with 400hp. No, that’s not a typo. It really has 400hp.

The specs on the Volkswagen Golf R 400 are pretty astounding. With the total Hp toping the standard Golf R by 100hp, VW has really stepped it up. Acceleration from 0-60 happens in just 3.9sec via a 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system and a 6-speed, light-weight dual-clutch gearbox. It’s low-weight body allows for a 3.5lbs/hp power-to-weight ratio. Incredibly the 400hp is made by a turbocharged 2.0L, based on a WRC (World Rally Championship) engine.

The 19″ wheels are new on the R 400, but sporting the same 235/35 R 19 tires as the standard Golf R. Suspension has been lowered another .7″. These, along with the all  traction control systems, should allow the Golf R 400 to rip some serious asphalt.

Body styling includes a wider body, larger flared fenders, redesigned front bumper, dual-rear spoiler, and a new paint scheme including accents of a ‘Lemon Yellow’ color.

What do you think?

The Volkswagen Golf R 400 seems like it’ll be a really special car. It’ll be interesting to see how it stacks up against the forthcoming Honda Civic Type-R. But, the real question is, what do you think? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
